Default What to ask and check when buying a used S2000

I am going to go look at a black 04 S2000 tomorrow. Current owner is a the second owner. It has 50K miles. I was told that the previous owner drove from Houston to Dallas everyday hence the high mileage.

What question should I ask and what should I look for in the test drive?

By the way, anyone knows how much the front seat cost? Whenever I look at a rather used car, the first thing I want to do is to replace the front seat.

OEM seats (I'm assuming that's what you meant) are $thousands (yep, that's plural). If you get one on eBay or the like, you'll probably be getting one that's been stolen from one of us, so don't do that. But seriously, unless you're really anal about it there should be no reason they'll need replacement.

Texas highway miles are pretty kind to cars and there's not much that is likely to be going wrong at that age, so I wouldn't worry too much, but have a mechanic check it over anyway.

the drivers seat you might see wear on the left seat wing after 50K miles. sometimes a good leather conditioner will resolve the problem maybe 80%.

-the cloth top are expensive to replace, is it in good condition and it should operate smooth
-bet the rear tires are bald
-as you just start and the drivetrain loads up you should not hear any noise clicking noise.
-after the car warms up it should v-tec

The best option would be to have a current or previous S2K owner drive the car and look it over. There are many unique but normal noises emitted from this car (especially with the top up). His or her impressions might help identify a problem if there is one for you.

When looking for a second hand car, I like to do an interview -- i.e. get the owner to drive the car. The owner's driving habits are what I look for ... (i.e. does he ride the clutch? etc)

I like having the owner take me for a drive first to let the car warm up and so I can take a good look at the condition of the interior and see the owner's driving habits.

I also like taking a look at the owner's other cars. It gives me a good indication if they truly take care of their cars or not. Usually if the owner is a car enthusiast, the other cars will be in good shape and similar condition to the car I'm looking at.

Service records/receipts are a must.

Id also do a compression and leak down and have the retainers looked at to hopefully assume a over-rev has not happened since that can usually be one of the more costly time bombs.

Check the tires. These cars are very particular about what tires are on them. And it should have the same brand on all 4 corners. Look underneath the car for damage. They sit pretty low and someone may have hit something on the road.

And last but not least - CHECK FOR INSURANCE RATES BEFORE YOU BUY!

Good luck!
