Default What is the best way to go from 2nd to 3rd?

Hi. On my 2002 Civic Si, it was easy for me to shift diagonally to the upper right to go from 2nd to 3rd. On the S2000, I have found that it might be better to guide it into neutral first and then straight up. I'd rather shift the S2000 diagonally as I did with the Civic Si.

So I'm wondering, how do you do it, how do you go from 2nd to 3rd? Do you shift with one diagonal motion? Or do you guide the shifter into neutral first, and then stright up into 3rd?

I have found that with the one swift movement technique, the shifter rubs slightly against the gate. It is not a good feeling.

If you're afraid of going into 5th accidentally, then you should let it in neutral and push straight up because when it's in neutral, the stick goes into its idle position which it right in the middle between 3rd and 4th.

^you already knew that but some don't.

Otherwise it's perfectly ok to do diagonally. Just be able to know where the stick is going especially while downshifting.

Diagonally, with a firm, certain shift.

Even if you go into fifth, no mechanical damage possible.

what do you mean rubs against the gate? i hold the shifter against the left side when i go from 1 -> 2, and against the right side on 5 -> 6. is that what you meant? that doesn't cause any kind of wear or damage i don't think?

for 2 -> 3, i also do one quick diagonal motion. i probably put a little pressure against the right side in 2, while moving into 3.

just put a little pressure to the right and up and it should drop right out of second into 3rd. Practice makes perfect I guess. All car's shifters feel different and require a little different shifting method.
