what to do with the leather thingy

it is definitely a PITA to put it on. I've used it exactly 3 times and now sits in the trunk folded up...oh well another dust collector!

You must be right then!

If Honda makes the part, they can call it whatever they want. If Honda calls it a ham sandwich, then that's what it is. Go to the Honda dealer and try to order a boot cover. The guy will look at you kinda weird. For the record, in the parts microfiche, it is referred to a a "top cover". I still think it is a tonneau cover. The CF and fiberglass versions are also definitely called tonneau.

Mines in a closet somewhere. I'd think it'd only be useful someplace where you'd get very little bad weather, arizona maybe?

they sell on ebay. there are a few on there now going for $30-$50 with a few bids.

Still looking for someone to make one out of neoprene that you could velcro in place... and roll up when not in use.

When I first saw it, I thought it was something for the trunk. Once I found out what it was for, I wanted to put on and try it out just to see how it looks. When I found the instructions to install it, I threw that thing right back in the trunk noticing it would be a PITA since I live in a climate where it can suddenly change.
