I can't believe people are so open to discussing their specific job and how much they make. The internet is not private.

It's not an issue with privacy. Don't get poison by years of HR brain wash. HR and the corporate goes the distance to work it into your head that salary is a private matter to save themselves from disgruntled employees and salary comparisons. If you work in a unionized environment salary privacy is not a big deal so I don't see why it would be for the rest of us.

I'm not so sure that was the point he was trying to get across.

Discussing your salary on the Internet could have nothing to do with the HR brain washing but could potentially make you or your family a target for exploitation based on your stated financial means.
