The more important question is why people use it. Is there any difference between MY2002 S2000 and simply '02 S2000?
Just because a car was purchased in 2002, it does not mean automatically it is a 2002 model. If the car was purchased early in 2002, it could have been a 2001 model that was left over. Likewise, if the car was purchased late in 2002, it could be a new 2003 model. So people on this board have generally adopted the designation "MY" to differentiate what model they are talking about, regardless of when the car was purchased. There are definitely differences between model years, so it is very important for some discussions what model people are talking about.

The MY designation is not needed. Just say '02 or '04!! Oh well, at least we got people to stop calling it a Stook. Man, I hated that.

One reason it is used is for reporting sales, i.e. CY (calendar year) sales vs MY (model year) sales.

Ok, so if you work for American Honda, are a financial analyst or are posting Sarbanes Oxley compliance reports, please make sure to differentiate between CY and MY. Otherwise, SHUT IT with the MY!

I have seen the term "MY" in newspaper adds, heard the term used in a tv commercial, heard it used at a dealership and as a matter of fact, have heard it used off and on over the years.

The term "model year" has been used since before we were born. Some folks just never realized that until they logged onto this site. I think it is appropriate.
