Default What Gear To rest the Car

When you park your car on a slope, Should you leave it in First or Reverse? I always left it in first but while I was reading the manual they said leave it in Reverse? This is no big deal to me but just wondering. Thanx for all replys!

Like the manual says, First if you're pointing up the hill, Reverse if you're pointing down the hill.

Ok, you park the car on an incline (front higher that the rear) and you stick it in 1st per CBeyond's post along with the parking brake. The brake fails and the car rolls backwards, turning the engine, as it's locked to the wheels. Which way does the motor turn? Its natural rotation or opposite?

Per Honda 2002 Owner's Manual (Page 141)

"If the car is facing uphill, turn the front wheels away from the curb and put the transmission in first gear. If the car is facing downhill, turn the front wheels toward the curb and put the transmission in reverse gear."

first if you're uphill, reverse if you're downhill

you want to be in the gear that works in the opposite way of gravity.
