Both of the above answers are correct. It is a term originally applied to european cars that are more than sedans but less than flat out sports cars. It connotes performance but with a civilized edge. It has been bastardized by domestic marketing to the point that it really has no meaning when applied to domestic automobiles

Had a buddy of mine that worked at an auto parts store... Guy walks in and says, "I'd like a gas cap for my Yugo please." My friend replied, "That sounds like a fair trade!"


You know... a picture of a Yugo with a big wing on the back would be one of the funniest things to ever be witnessed!

True Story: I had a colleague in grad school who had a Yugo. The day after the 2 year warranty expired (I kid you not), the transmission in his car fell out while driving home on a road that was about to be paved. Those _____ (fill in the blanks since I'm not sure where it was made Russia or the former Yugoslavia) sure were precise in their engineering!
