Default what is a "handling fee"?

Well i'm just finalizing the deal for my 02 Sebring/red S2k at 3.9% financing for 5 years. The dealer tries to throw a $299 "handling fee" at me. What is this? Is this common? I just negotiated my way out of it and am paying just msrp but am curious as to what the deal with this is. By mid next week i'll have "owner" under my username...WOOHOO!!!!

It's a fee you pay to the dealer for letting him sell a car to you. Some places it's called a processing fee, and in theory pays for the paperwork necessary to complete the sale.

It's called pure, unadulterated greedy dealer profit. Tell him to "handle this!"...

We have the same thing here. It's called a "documentation fee". I tell them to stuff it where the sun don't shine. As you get to be more accustomed to buying cars, you'll quickly realize that when you negotiate the deal, you must talk in terms of "bottom line", with everything included. You give them a cheque for that "bottom line" amount and they give you the keys to the car - NO EXTRA B.S. CHARGES. If they've forgotten things like tire tax, A/C tax, that's just tough. They suck it up.

Get it now. I only think of the temp here in *C so 39 didn't turn on any light bulbs.
It snowed here all morning but it only hung around the ground for a very short time. No problem posting here, me thinks. The original question was already answered pretty much.

yeah i figured it was BS. I'm glad i'm not paying it. It's not really the $300 that bothers me, i just hate being ripped off. if i don't get the best possible deal i could i get in a bad mood. I found the car for under MSRP at a few places, but they were all so far away that it wasn't worth it. If i would have taken another color i definitely could have found one cheaper but there was only one silver/red in the denver metro area.
