What is happening to the S2000?

I just drove a 2004 S2000. In my opinion I hate it. I just got word that in the future there is talk about them putting an automatic transmission in it. I think the S2000 will turn into more of a luxury car in the future, rather than the roadster it used to be. Below is listed some of the key elements as to why I have this opinion:
1. They softened the suspension up. There is nothing I loved more about the "old" S2000. I loved the way that the car rode because the stiffness of the suspension made it feel like you were driving a go cart instead of a car. In the 04 was cruising not even knowing I was hitting speed bumps.
2. You cant feel the VTEC engagement. I really enjoy everytime I VTEC it in the "old" car because it gave you that little extra kick before you had to shift, When I drove the 04 I thought it was broke because I did not feel it.
3. Whats with this "quieting down the engine" garbage. I think that the engine noise in the 00-03 was the best sounding car there was other than Ferraris. The 04 just does not have that noise that the "old" S2000s did.

No. Here in Ohio we have Honda R&D place. Friend of mine works there and he was involved in development of new TL.
He does not like 04 S2000. For the same reasons listed above.
Honda watered down(figure of speech) the 04 S2000 to appeal to more crowd. Not everyone appreciates purly track ready production car that can be reved up to 9 grand.
I drove 04. I loved everything about the car but when I got back on my 03, it felt more raw. Suspension was exactly the way I wanted in stock form.
04 S2000 is a great car. I wouldn't mind owning one but If I had to choose, I would choose 03.
All the quirks are worked out and I can still rev my car to 9k.
And I do hate the new gauge. Too many rainbows, if you know what I mean
Why can't we all just get along. If someone says they don't like the 04, well that is fine. You don't have to go on the defensive and think that everyone thinks your car is crap if they happen to own a 00-03. Change is never an easy thing to deal with especially when it is a car we all love. I bought an 03 just to get one of the last new 03s to come to Texas but I was planning on waiting and getting an 04 as soon as they came out. It was a good buy and so I took it. Enjoy your car and if someone doesn't like it then get over it.
As someone new to the S2000, and having just purchased a MY04 I feel sorry that so many people with MY00-03 are disappointed in their newest brother... I for one waited for the MY04 so I could own a car that was more a little more refined, but still capable of making me want to race it on the weekends.
Having not made it past 600 miles I can't tell you about the "vtec" engagement; however, I can tell you as I reach 5,500 rpm the engine growl gets louder and makes me want to tach it up to redline. Is that it?
The new car may be more refined, but after reading comments from back-cracker and ron bauer, it seems that a stock MY04 will turn in faster lap times or autoX times than any stock MY00-03.
So my question to all the purists out there is... would you rather drive faster or just feel like you're driving faster?
Time to go to my first autoX and see how the S2000's are running - MY00-04...

It's still a Honda and it's still an S2000 and no matter what you think of it, I consider it part of the family. It does noone any good to disseminate hatred for another S2000. Go ahead and state what is not right for you about the new car but LEAVE THE HATE AT HOME! I wish those who think about starting these kinds of threads would THINK AGAIN! You hate it? Then go to the Nissan board and tell them. They'll love you for it.
It seems to me a lot of the objective comments have little to do with the performance of the '04 S2000. "Lack" of VTEC kickin could and likely mean more power preVTEC, hence better performance. Not revving to 9k? Many excellent performance sports car do not get to that rpm, yet are every bit performance or even more so. Softer suspension.. see how fast you can get it around the track. You might be faster stock for stock with the newer model.
Quieter? Good to listen to the stereo, but not necessarily slower. The stock exhaust I put back on my S2000 seems very quiet. I acutally like that at this time!
Any year, I like the S2000.
