I think that they're there for more aesthetic reasons anyway...

The hoops are functional as roll over devices but their not the strongest in the world, which is why to race (at high speed) the "S" an upgrade is frequently required. If the car was not safe Honda would not sell it.......liability issues don't you know.

I am also 6'1", and yeah, it looks ominous. They are very strong, I have seen pictures of flipped s2000s and the roll bars were intact, as I can recall, the windshield frame was also intact.

The rollbars seem to work but don't really expect any protection for anyone not wearing a helmet. In a rollover, even a shorter person will bang a head, if not on top, out the side.

The good news is that rollover accidents are quite rare if you're not in a van or SUV.

I see a lot of motorcycles running around without roll bars... and convertibles without ANY roll bars.

At least they won't have to wait for the jaws of life to extract me!

I'm with jschmidt on this. You will likely hit your head in a rollover, even if you're "short," rollbars or not. The seatbelt and airbag are not going to keep your rear on the seat when the car is upside down. Gravity and/or cetrifugal force will see to that.
