What Kind of Gas do you use?
Due to the different methods of labelling fuel in different countries, it may be a bit hard to compare. I also think I have heard some areas have different fuel for different seasons.
I know in Japan they have 100 rated fuel (not sure if this is RON or what).
Now in Australia the best fuel we have right now is 98 RON. Our fuels are measured in RON, not sure what how America measures the fuel type. I run the 98 RON fuel, but this fuel is also meant to have a greater density compared to the standard fuel and therefore gives better fuel economy, it also has detergents to help keep the injectors clean.
A stock car made to run on 100RON would not benefit from 105RON unless you modified the engine management.
Whilst you may hear stories about forced induction cars getting extra power because of the extra octane, this is only because they have an aftermarket ECU (with dyno tuning) to reset the optimum timing limits.
Some FI cars (mainly turbo) have adjustable boost levels with corresponding engine management maps (eg timing/fuel maps etc). For example, a switch to toggle between 18 PSI boost running racing fuel and 7PSI boost running standard fuels.

93 Amoco here. I am a firm believer in the higher octanes for high revving 4cyls. True story:
I borrowed my dad's full-size GMC for a project around the house. He was driving my 99 Lude for a week. We switch back and I'm in the McDonalds drive through grabbing my morning coffee. Lude stalls twice. I forget it. Later that week same thing happens but in my bank drive through. It sounded different too....especially in drive through hearing engine sound reverb off of brick building wall. Hmmm. I call my dad and sure enough he let my 93 run almost dry and filled her up with some 87. After a 93 fill up...never happened again.
Now I'm not a Chem E but that was enough evidence for me.

I use Amoco (BP) or Chevron 93 octane non-reformulated gas . I am fortunate enough to live near the Chesterfield-Powhatan border, and Powhatan is not Metro Richmond, and exempt from having to use EPA-mandated re-formulated (oxygenated) fuel, which has less specific output and tends to leave deposits.
Hi Im a newbie from the uk and am considering buying an s2k, but I find this fuel debate a little confusing.
We have "Unleaded" or "Optimax" type fuels here and pay crazy prices for it as well.
I do a lot of milage for work and really would need to use our unleaded petrol as opposed to the higher octane stuff - can I do this or am I being unrealistic ?
This sadly could make the decision a difficult one due to excessive running costs.
By the way - Great site
