Default What is meant that the S2000 is "handbuilt?"

I've often heard that the S2000 is "handbuilt" in the same factory that produces the Acura NSX.

I feel that the term "handbuilt" implies that a shop's highly trained technicians build only a few items a day using the highest quality controls, as opposed to a factory cranking out thousands of products in a day.

Is this true? Are S2000s built to a higher standard than a Civic or an Accord?

It's a hand assembled car. Same factory as NSX in Tochigi, Japan.

Anyway, here's the OFFICIAL FROM HONDA statement about moving NSX, Insight and S2000 production from the Takanezawa plant to the Suzuka plant.

I don't know about the new '04s, but I know that the '99-03 were all assembled in Tochigi. It's notorious for sharing the same manufacturing plant as the NSX and having a test ground only minutes away. The S2000's engine is hand built, and I think (emphasis on think) the body is part machine and man assembled.

If you look on the sticker price tag (I kept all the stuff with all the cars that I buy, just for the sake of it), look at the parts content info, it'll show that all parts are 100% sourced from Japan and teh final Assembly point is Takanezawa, Tochigi, Japan. I believe Takanezawa is the region in which Tochigi, the city, is located in. Also, a cool thing is the VIN number is etched in every single window of our car, and even small stuff like bumper moldings, etc. Talk about matching numbers!

That's what happens when you mix Japanese assemblymen/women, sake, and 6:00pm on Friday. Karaoke!
