66mph

I believe it's 65..some people have bounced the rev and have even hit 70, I think.

68-70mph ... taching around 9200-9400rpm... I shift at 66mph, right at 9-9.1k

Speedo's aren't that accurate. they are only supposed to be accurate at 55mph, anything less or more than that - it doesn't matter from the manufacturer's point of view. Personally, my speedo reads 4mph faster than it really is. I've tested this with two GPS systems. Its very consistent and doesn't matter if I'm going 20 or 120, its still only 16 and 116.
And just because you are only shifting one gear doesn't mean too much. It all has to do with gearing and the horses. For instance, a Diablo - old 2wd one not sure about the 4wd verson - would go to 62 in first gear. Heck, my Mustang would go up to 75 in second gear with stock 2.73 gears (but that was on an '88). |
I save the max speed per gear thread on my iPaq. I am just straight copy and pasting it right now.

Are these gear ratios optimized for S2000?
I've read that almost 99% of the cars are geared so that it will reached 60mph before a need for 3rd gear.. By doing this, it might make some gears unnecessarily tall and result in drop off from the powerband.. One of the car like this is the Celica GT-S... I believe it was from the SCC mag. |
I think the gear ratio is pretty good and close. All S2000 can go from red-line to red-line without dropping off VTEC power band. I know we have a very short Final Drive (4.1). To still achieve the result that the car already have is amazing due to lack of torque.

Call me a liar..............I swear though that I broke seventy in second. (71 I think?) It was when I first got the car and was trying to impress my friend. I'll never do that again!

Keith, you are correct that your larger rolling radius tires make the speedo more accurate, the stock tires make speedo off by ~3-4% (indicating faster than true). So the people that saw an indicated 170 were really just over 160 if on stock size tires. |
Originally posted by KrazyKarim 3rd isn't really the problem it's more when your hitting 2nd, your have to shift mega fast to keep the car in lift from 1st-2nd and it's actually caused a lot of people to jack up their synchros cause they've been trying to shift too fast, then i have heard of a few morons who just stayed on the gas when they shifted and were able to keep it in lift but they are having quite a bit of tranny problems now. On the other hands some people haven't had any problems and have no problem keeping it in lift. I think it's harder to stay in lift for the 02's cause of the lowered rev-limiter, no more shifting at 8200, now it's like 7600, lift kicks at 6k. Thanx for the info guys. Karim |
