what is the "MY" all about?

yeah this threw me when I first started posting here too, it's the only car forum I know of where people use MY all the time. What is the point of it though? I mean, if somebody just says "I have an '03" without the MY it's not like I don't know what they're talking about. In fact I think the MY would cause more confusion if anything.
Never used the "MY" route myself- don't get it.
In general discussions, it is not necessary to be precise about the model year. However, when a problem is being described, it matters exactly what model year is involved. A lot of Americans only remember the year the car was purchased, so when they say "I bought the car in 2003", they don't necessarily mean the car was a MY2003. It could have been a left-over 2002 or it could be an early 2004 model. In the early days of the S2000, there were subtle changes and corrections from model year to model year, so it was important that the precise model was identified. And that lead to the habit to use MY to designate the model year.
I am amazed that people would not even know what model year their own car is, but I understand what you're saying. Personally, when somebody says "it's an '03" I have always taken that to mean model year, not the year somebody purchased it. And when I ask "what year is that" I would expect them to tell me the model year, not the year it was purchased. That seems kind of silly to me. It would be like me asking some guy with an old camaro "what year is that" and he tells me it's an '01 because he bought it in '01 even though it's really a '69.
I've read the MYXX designation so many times that I use it without thinking. Funny, I'm pretty sure I always immediately read it as Model Year. Strange thing, though, I never saw it before I came to S2ki.
