Just curious, what the exact purpose of the gauges? What would you do if it indicates whether your car is running high or low pressure and temp??

You obviously wouldn't need any gauges under normal conditions. However, if you want to monitor your car at the track, gauges are VERY necessary.

i.e. Oil temperature is critical in any racing engine. Obviously, if your oil is boiling hot, you better pit your car before you have some serious thermal breakdown of the oil. Most temperature gauges are used for same reasons. Boost gauges are obvious. A/F ratio is also their to monitor your motor's condition.

If you don't push your car too hard or if you don't take it to a track, don't worry about it.

psst - some people add it for the "show" reasons.

I wonder if having an oil pressure gauge would have given sufficient warning to those who have had cylinder 4 and related failures--failures which Honda typically attributes to low oil.

If you don't drive your car hard on crazy mountain twisties for an hour or more ... If you don't race or track your car. Then any sort of guages is quite useless for you. Of course, if you do any of the above ... They do provide some critical information just before the car does screw up and incur some expensive damages or just cause pure annoyance.
