What is rev-matching?
I have been browsing this board and read that ppl rev match when they down shift. How is rev-matching done? what rpm should be rev to? Is rev-matching really necessary when downshifting?
Rev matching is just what the name implies--matching engine revs to car speed. Say you are in 4th at 4000 rpm. You decide to shift to 3rd. Assume at that same car speed if you were already in 3rd the engine would be at 5000 rprm. So as you downshift from 4th to 3rd you raise the revs to 5000 BEFORE you engage the clutch.
Is it necessary? No, but it eases wear on the clutch and makes you a better smoother driver (no little jerk as you engage the clutch. Note that rev matching is NOT the same as double clutching which is different and takes rev matching one step further.

It takes some practice but I prefer to press in the clutch, take it to neutral, let off the clutch, rev up to desired RPM, and then quickly press clutch back in and upshift. It sounds like a lot but it really isn't once you have practiced it a bit.
Check out the Best Motoring videos. The drivers do it on every downshift:
