Sorry if this is a FAQ, but search seems to be broken at the moment.

What's under the horizontal bump in front of both seats, and why does it have to be raised? Is it a chassis strengthening brace or something?

My wife was puzzled (and mildly annoyed) by it and asked me, and I certainly don't know the answer...
