Default What's your theory on "bogging?"

When you're at low rpms and you push the gas pedal to the floor... what happens in a non-DBW S2000?

Does your car groan and slooooowly accelerate?

What is actually happening to the engine? Getting more gas than air? Does it wind up flooding the engine somewhat and impeding acceleration?

Just wondering. Since going back to stock gears, I've been spending more time at lower rpms. I don't remember what it's like to spend lots of time sub-VTEC.

???

I try to VTEC it every gear.

If I'm trying to relax and take it easy ill shift at 6k.
Otherwise i take it to redline.

From everything i have read there is no damaged caused.

you would always much rather give more gas and wear out your clutch faster than to bog the motor. Bogging is a no go in my world.

Is it hot outside? It's probably related to the heat -- when it gets hot, there's a whole lot of timing retard being done to prevent detonation. Which kills all the power as well.

The S is not a low rpm car. Once you get away from a complete stop, you really shouldn't be below 3k rpm imo, as the car really doesn't respond below 3k.

What does bogging actually do that is bad to the motor. The ECU knows whether you're bogging or not from the map sensor. Not that I bog my motor all the time, but the concenses here is that bogging is bad, and I've never heard a good reason.

I think the "damage caused" is more transmission related than engine related.

When you describe the initial bog off the line in extreme heat, thats when the timing is retarded and its making less power (very noticable with A/C on). But intentially bogging the car (i.e., 5th gear at 25mph) is where the wear and tear issue stems. I feel like shit and am at work so I don't have time but search on here.. its been discussed. The consenses was don't do it...

mine takes off fine at partial throttle above 2000 rpm, ijust keep it there, yes the "mid range" of 3-4k is a better place to be when you know you have to pass and will be flooring it sooner, the difference between models includes gearing and that is why mine does not bog i guess.
