The only problem I found with removing the original finish is how easily finger prints end up on it now. Bummer. I found I was wiping off the console just about every time I got into/out of the car. I eventually replaced the console with a newer one, so problem solved.

Has anyone clear-coated over the polished look?
once you stripoff the dull finish and get that shiny look be care ful if you constantly rest your arm there waiting to shift etc etc. I have acidic sweat and I have since bubbled up my shiny finish by resting my arm there constantly. Now it is coming off!!!

Grey plastic underneath BTW

Just read this.

Want to do it to my S. Did you remove any area of the console or did you just rub the existing paint off whilst still fixed in the car?

Also did you use any masking tape? etc

Cheers.

I did this several years ago and I did remove the plastic console piece. It's not hard, but there are 2 heat welds holding the painted trim ring to the larger black console that must be ground off. Additionally, the bottom edge of the shift boot material is held in place by some fragile plastic pins. I knocked a few of these off while removing the paint.

Removing the paint in place with rubbing alcohol is probably easiest. If you do remove the console you can use model paint remover safely and the edges will be easier to clean.

If you do this. consider adding a Honda Ti shift knob. The trim ring, emergency brake button and shift knob will match nicely.
