The information given are actually quite similar to the ones on the '04 dealer brochures.

Is it just me who thinks the S2000 doesn't need more torq? I rather have 9000rpm redline than more torq. It's got enough torq as it is today. People don't mention that when trying to move a 2,800 lb. car, the engine doesn't need as much torq as a 3,400+ lb. car's engine would.

This is a really stupid question, but I keep reading that the S2000 doesn't have enough low end torque. What does this mean exactly? Could someone please explain what is torque? Have had my S2000 for three months now and love it!!!!

Torque is the pull you feel in an engine at lower RPM's. Next time your drive your car, at 2000 rpms in any gear, stomp the gas...the speed and rpms will gradually climb until reaching 6000, upon which it will scream. Do the same in a big block motor, like a corvette with a 454 and chances are you will break the tires loose.

Generally, if an engine revs high, it will have lower torque. Conversely, if the engine has a lot of torque, such as a big block Chevy, it has a very low redline, like 4500 rpm or something.

It mostly has to do with the stroke of the engine. If it's longer, the distance the piston swings out from the center of the crank is longer, thus creating more centrifugal force and with more centrifugal force, you have the more pressure on the lower end parts under higher rpms.

Personally, I love the S2000. I just drove my buddy's 2003 NSX today and man can you feel the difference when stepping on the gas at 2500 rpm. When people complain about the lack of torque in the S, it is in this situation that it lacks. Many of the people on this site who race their cars aren't as worried about the lack of torque because they do 6000 rpm clutch drops which basically keeps their engine in the power band from the get go. Unfortunately, it's very hard on the car and is something I will not do.

So, yes, I would love to have more torque but there's something to be said for having that 9000 rpm redline. Can't have your cake and eat it too.....well, not without spending the big bucks anyway.

In keeping with the title of this thread, there was a brief item in Car and Driver magazine that the 04 model would be 2200cc, with more torque (didn't say how much), but would still have a 9K redline. I mentioned this to my dealer and they didn't deny it, but I've also heard some in this forum say that 03 is the last production year for the S2K (although I haven't it anywhere else). Guess we'll see what happens. I agree that the current engine has adequate torque, but more wouldn't hurt.
