Default Whistling noise in 6th at around 60 mph when on gas ?

I just had the S2000 for a week so I don't know if this sound occurs in other conditions but as I was driving on the highway yesterday just cruising at a constant 60 mph (in 6th gear), I hear a noticeable (almost electronic-like) whistling noise from the engine/powertrain (I'm not sure exactly where) only when I'm on the gas. It seems to be dominant in the 60-65 mph range - is this normal? Thanks.

probably a faulty differential.

Don't worry about any noises. This car has no sound proofing and you can hear everything in the drive train. If something is wrong you will definitely know it.

yep, I get it too, but mostly around 55 mph, or around 3-3.5k in any gear, it's just intake wistle, nothing to be alarmed about...

If you hear grinding, clicking, or smell something burnin, then you know somethings wrong...

While there are several possibilities that could cause this noise, one may be the air being intaked by the engine. Since this engine breathes so well, air intake speed could cause this sound as it passes across sharp edges such as the two rivets at the air box opening. As FSures pointed out, this car definitely makes some noise. I wear ear plugs when I drive with the top down to cut down on all the noise.

I have gotten this same noise as well. However, mine comes over 100mph ... when I switch from 5th to 6th at high aRPM for a straight out shoot, I hear the whistling noise. I think it is the intake as it needs to breathe a lot harder. No need to worry.

Sincerely,

I noticed this new "intake whistle" after I stuffed in my K&N replacement drop-in filter. I've even tried rotating the cone around to different angles, but it's still there. It's worse with the air box cover off, too.

Yea so I took it in to the dealer yesterday to have a service advisor ride in with me as I drove. It came from the rear of the car and it appears that the noise is present during acceleration and also when I'm just cruising (but only when on the gas). He said it is the differential and it is normal to hear a subtle whining/whistling noise on the S2k coming from the differential. He sounded like he knew what he was talking about but he really isn't a tech, just a service advisor that talks to customers in the service dept so I dunno how much stock I can put into assessment.

So, fellow S2k'ers, do you guys hear a subtle whining noise as you accelerate and also when cruising (only on gas) coming from the rear of the car? It sounds kinda electronic-like.

On a related note, I dunno if it is coming from the same source but whenever I start the car and after like 2-3 seconds, I hear a similar whining/whistling noise that lasts about a couple of seconds and dies off. Is this the differential "warming up"?
