Default Who do you trust? Carfax or the Dealer?

I have been shopping for an S2000 for a while now. I have found one out of state.
One of those hens you always hope for. A reasonable price and super low miles.

Here is the thing. The milage is In the high 20s. So you think hey here is a garage kept hardly driven car. Awesome!
But when u click the link for the free Carfax it says the car has "4 Previous Owners"

How is that possible? Each owner drove 5000 miles and decided they didn't like Hondas??

Who do you trust?

If I were in your shoes, and I truly knew that this was THE ONE, i'd pay for the entire carfax report. Plus, what do you got to lose?Better to know all of its info than just a basic outline and summary. Trust me, you wont regret it!

I completely agree, just pay for the entire report.

Having 4 owners and being low mileage isn't uncommon or something to worry about, maybe the previous owners either didn't drive it enough to justify keeping it, didn't want a convertible anymore, etc. could be a ton of reasons why. Better to check its service history in the carfax report than anything else.

In the grand scheme of things, paying for a car fax is a small investment for peace of mind. I did a carfax once and found a car the dealer was trying to sell had over 20 owners! It's worth it. Also check Honda for recall info as well.

A couple of years ago, I was looking for an SUV. I found one in Dallas, and got the complete carfax report, which showed no body repair. But after that, I hired an inspector to look at the car. He reported that that all of the rear side panels on the rear, drivers' side, had been replaced. He also reported a bunch of other problems that weren't even hinted at in the carfax. Carfax certainly isn't infallible.

Hello just wanted to inform people that even though it is good to check all the resources that you have available always remember that dealers are able to clean up Carfax and Autocheck!

IMO, isn't a $30 or less Carfax a better investment than $1500 or more in repair costs? Not that Carfax is perfect, it is just a tool. In my experience before getting my S2K in Feb '13, I got the Carfax and it gave me something like 3 or 5 checks. 1st car got hit in AZ. 2nd car had way too many owners. 3rd car I didn't need since researching at dealers website stated that the car had seats stolen. Last car had 2 owners, low yearly miles and no hits. I still had to replace clutch and master cylinder but.that is it. I also noticed that there was evidence that at one time, someone tried to break into this car from a minor ding in drivers door but that is all. What I learned is it can help but if an accident or vandalism is not reported or someone pays cash or somehow gets the work done "under the table" it won't show up in car fax. Also what won't show up is needed repairs. What I recommend is, do your research, get a Carfax, test drive the vehicle, and take it to a trusted mechanic or Honda to check it out. Hope this is helpful to you.

I would just pay the $30 to be sure. Or pay the $55 for the fake unlimited one so at least if you find out this one is a dud, you can still Carfax other potentials.

In my opinion, carfax is only reliable to make sure you aren't getting a salvaged title car or going into something that has a lien or had one in the past, that way you know to ask the previous owner to provide the lien release letter.

I would not rely on Carfax if you're only concern is about accidents. Any car could have a previous accident that wasn't reported to insurance BUT at least it says there were no accidents on paper so you can sell it easier in the future.

We can speculate all you want but it won't mean anything. Do your due diligence. Get the full report. Have the vehicle inspected. Same as any other purchase.
