Default why do some have problems with the soft top tearing and some don't?

from what i understand, some people have issues with the soft top tearing, and some people just don't. it seems like it's not a matter of how often you put the top up and down, but it's some other factor. is this correct? if so, what's causing it on the unlucky cars that tear their tops?

how should you go about repairing the top once the rips have already occurred? I've got about a 1/2 inch one and a 1/4 inch one on the passenger side where the frame rubs :/

Try to buy soft top patches ppl are selling on the forum to fix rips. Get some adhesive (contact cement, vinyl cement, black silicon) and apply them inside the top where you have minor tears or wearing. I personally use HH-66 works very well.

New oem top will run you about $700-800 and install another $600-700 or more or you can DIY. Hardtop will run you $2-3k depending on type.

Okay, will do. Do you know if the tears will grow any more once I apply the patches?

I have two small 1/2 inch tears on the passenger side from frame wearing down the soft top and month later after applying the patch with hh-66 it hasn't grown at all. Make sure you clean both patch surface and soft top surface before you use the adhesive.

From what I remember my car was sitting out side top down the next morning till noon in about 95-100 temp. When to put it back up and got a tear. It was bound to happen eventually since the frame was wearing that spot down. If you see any wear spots just do some preventative maintenance on that area. Also, clean and protect the top with 303 aerospace or Raggtopp for vinyl.

Good Luck

When you do get that top changed, shave down EVERY sharp edge you find on your top, then protect it with some coating (touch up paint?). I did this to mine when I switched my top and so far *knocks on wood* its been ok. 3 years

There is actually a tsb on this. Sharp edges on the frames cause the soft top to tear. If you already have tears, then you could patch it. There is a guy selling patches right now in the forsale section.
