One final thought for tonight...

Let's agree to skip the driver error rants on this thread; the idea was to proceed with an open mind that some or all S2000's may have issues which could improve it's tendency to spin out. Being a RWD mid engine car that tendency is always going to be there, but I'm willing to be open to the possibility that "defects" (for lack of a better word) are contributing in some or all S2000's.

thanks!

Quote from Triple-H:

I'll will say this, when my Mom bought her new '01 Subaru Outback and it came with Firestone tires, I went out and bought 4 Michelin Pilots, put them on the car and threw away the brand new Firestones, Mom still thinks I lost my mind that day.

Triple-H,

One of my cousins used to work at the Firestone Plant in Decatur, IL where those "bad" tires that Ford used on it's Explorers' were made. It was NO surprise to me that they had problems with those tires. Also, there is NO WAY that you will see me using tires that say Firestone on them. I don't blame you one little bit for replacing your Mom's tires...good job.

So much for that previous post being the "final" tonight

I just remembered that Jason Saini meantioned that "Bump Steer" could be (is?) contributing to the S2000 wanting to spin the rear around, esp. if a bump or dip is encountered in a turn. How much, if any, this issue would contribute to our discussion I don't know.

I don't know what it is, but I suspect there is more to it than just inexperienced drivers.
Don't forget old, worn tires! It has been pointed out at least 71,000,000,000 times on this board that there is no comparison between S02's at 1000 miles and S02's at 12,000 miles. If you want, I can find a dozen posts where someone says, "Wow, I didn't know my tires were bald until I took them off to change brake pads/install new wheels/etc.". Our tires wear unevenly due to our alignment settings and many owners don't realize how worn their tires are.

I would still like to see someone do a search for all of the "I wrecked my car last night" threads. Then check the posts and PM the owner to see a) what kind of tires they had, b) what condition the tires were in, c) how much mileage they had on the tires, d) air temperature and tire temperature (i.e., had they driven far enough for the tires to be warm). If I had 3 or 4 hours free, I would do it myself.

I am glad that people in this thread want to do some real analysis of the issue.

Sounds like a plan.
So, in that case, what we need is evidence (not speculation or opinion) of such a "defect" or "defects" manifesting in an observable and replicatable pattern.

Tanqueray; its a fact that our tires, on stock settings wear unevenly? I can expect that? Usually inside, outside, what? Thanks.

Inside wears first in regular driving. Tracking the car helps wear more of the outsides. Next time you come by the bay Area, I'll show you a few of my old tires and you'll see what i mean.

My car had rear toe-OUT when I picked it up of the showroom floor. It took me good 5-6 months to figure it out but it made the back very 'floaty'. That means that it stepped out very easily. Though, it was never snappy ... it was very progressive.

I had the alligned changed to toe-IN (as well as more agressive) and my back is a lot more planted. Actually the whole car feels a lot more sure-footed. I had the car at this short track about 2 months before the allignment and then 2 months after. My best lap time went from 50.3 sec to 48.1 sec.
