A cheesy request to the elders of the group. Would you check out this thread and tell me what you think? Thanks!

There is nothing about this car that is cheap. Parts for this car cost far more than for any car I have ever owned.

Parts are pretty expensive, but I'd expect it being the most expensive honda I've owned

Well you can't expect 30hp out of I/H/E. Most of those mods are compromises, you lose some down low to gain some up high. Don't forget that no matter how efficent an engine and hardcore a car may be from the factory, the car is still made with the general public and streetability in mind, meaning you'll have a quiet intake and exhaust and a softer suspension. Those of us who are willing to sacrifice some of those will put mods on their car simple as that.

Surely you can improve the performance. Honda engineers designed the car with engineering goals in mind... and those included cost.

Got anything substantial to add, or just flaming?

I tend to agree with ET -- its pretty dialed-up from the factory. It would take a significant investment to do much more with it. Blowing a couple grand to get even 20HP wouldn't be worth it for me. Thats just me and for all you know, I have three heads...

I definitely would consider the supercharger, but to mess around with anything in-between SC and stock -- why bother?

If you need all the competitive edges you can get, then anything in-between makes sense. I doubt many of us autoX or race enough or at all to care about incremental improvements. For those who do, well, I guess you pave the way for the more serious mods to come to market, that is, the kind that I might actually bother with.

turbo_pwr, the Japanese models make an extra 10 HP because the compression ratio has been further increased from 11.0:1 to 11.7:1 not due to any I/H/E changes.

I like to look at the overall value of any horsepower gain, or dollar/HP. So far I haven't seen any modifications that are worth it for ME but others obviously don't mind spending money for gains of only a few HP.

Many of the modifications for the S2k, or any car, are simply cosmetic or sound enhancements. So many people just want a car that is different from the car that's parked next to them.

It is obvious that Honda has not gotten anywhere near the maximum power available out of this engine since they are able to extract upwards of 1000 hp from their 3-liter racing engines; however, I would hate to have to have my engine replaced or rebuilt every two weeks or so. Given the parameters of polution, economy and noise compliance, plus reliability issues, I think Honda has done a remarkable job.

I appreciate the fact that they didn't just substitute cubic centimeters for technical sophistication to extract optimum power. If our fellow-forum members can extract a few more hp or 100 more (SC) via legal mods, more power to them. To me, the cost/hp for these mods are not worth it, and in the coming years I hope we're not hearing about any ill effects such mods have caused.

I said a long time ago that this engine is like a modern sportbike engine in that after putting a K&N Filter, rejetting (flow more fuel in our case) and a low restriction exhaust you are not going to be able to do much more without forced induction or increasing displacement. I also said I would be surprised if anyone got more than 20 HP without forced induction or increased displacement. I have followed this board pretty close and I haven't seen anyone document 20 HP or better within the above parameters.

So yes there may be 15 to 20 HP without TOO much pain. It is up to the individual to determine if the noise and expense of these mods are worth it.

No one is going to get the 30 to 50 HP they predicted 2 years ago when they first started talking about how much more power they were going to get. People were VERY surprised when they found out how well designed the stock exhaust and airbox was. Honda did not leave that much on the table.
