Default will skipping gears mess with synchros?

Just wondering whether skipping gears will ruin the synchros....example: From 1 straight to 3....or if on the freeway and you want to race someone, shifting from 6 to 4...

I do it all the time, and I have never had a problem. I very rarely use 5th, unless I am only going up to 45 or so. And the occasional, "spirited drive"

You won't instantly kill the synchroes; you're just making them wear faster.

This was discussed a while back, and there were some technical arguments about what JL9000 just said (by the way, JL, I dig your sig!!! Beautiful picture! ).

Give the site search tab a go, Saint.

My personal feeling on this is that it's a pretty minor issue. I think if you take your time engaging the shifter, you're really not causing a problem. But I'm not completely sure about that.

No, nikko, I don't think so... I'm not a transmission expert, but I know that synchros help you change gears. Without synchromesh gears, you can't just push in the clutch and throw the shifter from one gear to the next in one motion. I believe you'd have to double-clutch, i.e., release the clutch with the tranny in neutral and then re-apply the clutch and shove into gear.

It has to do with the way the transmission spins when you pull the car out of a given gear...

Hi I have been doing this for years, first with a 5 speed Alfa and then with a 5 speed 240SX, BUT-But I almost always use a double clutch when doing this. No gear problems yet. Now that I have the S2K I try to do a heel and toe also, this is hard to get right but when it is right it feels sooo good! Some times I went from 5th to second.

You can't always believe what you hear and in this case, what you've heard has mislead you considerably. Have a look at this thread:

In particular, read over what "cmnsnse" posts. He is a tranny expert and has taken the S2000 apart more times than most people have changed oil. What he has to say will give you an idea of what synchros are and what they do.
