Default Windshield Chip

I was driving down the highway at 65ish and as many people have, I got a stone chip on the windsheild after something hit it. This is not at all odd as things happen.

The odd part is that, the inside of the windshield cracked as well. I was hit with a small chunk of glass, about the size of a match head or so. I was under the impression that safety glass was designed to not do this...Could someone enlighten me.

Perhaps i need to bring this to the dealer?

Definitely do that. You should be able to get it replaced under warranty, since it sounds like a huge liability. I hope you kept the glass chip though.

I can safely say that I have never had that happen and I have gone through a lot of windshields.

Windshields are laminated in the middle of two sheets of glass not the inside or outside, so they can chip like that, although its pretty odd to happen like that. Can your whole windhield shatter into a million pieces and fly at your face? No, but it can chip from either side.

Depending on the state your in, the windshield can be replaced through your insurance with no penalty. I assume some states do this to prevent people deciding to live with a broken window to avoid the deductable.

The lamination is in the middle. Safety glass is supposed to break into small pieces so that a big shard won't cut your throat.

i was under the impression that it shouldnt chip to the inside like that especially from the relatively small stone chip (granted it spidered pretty bad)

i cant find the chip of course lol. I could understand it breakin to the inside if it was hit with a bat or a massive boulder or something like that but this doesnt sound safe to me. What if i got hit in the eye with that shard of glass irregardless as to how small it is?

Most insurance policies cover damage to glass.
