I'm not a car snob, I like all kinds of cars for what they do. Whether it's cruising with the top down or getting groceries at 30 mpg, if the car does what it is designed to do well, then I appreciate it.

I rag on some cars here and there but mostly it's just because of the people who own them thinking it's the best car ever, and I like to give them a little now and then, i.e. "I agree the Mustang is the best car ever produced, right up to the point where you have to turn. Then, it's average at best."

s2000 is actually considered to be quite expensive in australia. Buying a s2000 here new would cost about 75000AUD.

Therefore it is actually quite an expensive car here.

BMW, Mercedes, Jag, Snaab, POrsche, Audi, etc are snob cars.

You cannot be a snob in a honda.
You sure about that? There are plenty of honda snobs.

Doesn't really matter as affluence really has nothing to do with being a snob. If you drive a Civic and you think that everyone that doesn't drive a Honda is inferior to you, then you are a snob with a Civic.

And see, in that example I would classify the guy as a poseur.

If he was the only one in his peer group that could afford a Honda then perhaps snob would fit better, at least in his lower income peer group.

However, if the only reason that the other folks in his peer group don't own Hondas, is that they don't WANT Hondas, yet he illogically "stretches" this mean that he is somehow better because they exercised free choice?

Poseur.

Imagine a trailer park, and you happen to have the only doublewide at the facility.

Among the other 100 trailer dwellers at the park, you could be a snob.

However if you own the 1986 Fleetwood with the garden tub option...you'd be a poseur, even in that small fishbowl.

I don't see the distinction between a poseur and a snob. A rich shob is just a rich poseur. Both rich and poor snob are doing the same thing, specifically thinking that they're better than others. Being a snob is all in one's mental attitude and doesn't require any possessions at all. The guy sleeping under a freeway overpass who thinks he's better than any of us because he's less wasteful of expendable resources can be a snob too, if he really thinks his lifestyle makes him better than others. A snob is anyone who acts like a snob. It is what you call someone who ACTS like they are better than others, whether they are, or not.

All snobs are poseurs, but not all poseurs are snobs.

Although, the snobbiness could be related to an item and not "better than another person," I suppose.

Imagine some Paris Hilton-type that is used to sleeping on 1500 thread count Egyptian sheets. They have to spend a night in a Day's Inn with tablecloth-textured sheets... they whine and complain.

They're snobs. But they're not thinking that they're better than anyone else (as a direct comparison). They're just thinking they're better than the situation. Now I suppose, you could say that they're saying they're better than the people who stay at Day's Inns. But I think that's a little bit of a stretch.

You could have someone who likes high thread count sheets, but also enjoys camping...

So I don't know. Like the proverbial tree in a forest... can you be a snob with nobody else around? I would say yes. It's the maladaptive and negative attitude towards the offending item / person that I think defines a snob to me.

Conversely, I don't think a poseur exists with nobody else around. You don't buy fake Louis Vitton bags and Lambo Doors if there's nobody to see them.
