Ok, maybe I'm bored because the weather sucks here this morning, so I was browsing the Z3 boards on Bimmer.org and they have a very interesting thread on the S2000. Some great comments.

Check it out at: http://www.bimmer.org/z3/messages/messages/25239.html

More praise than I thought they would garner on the car. Bimmer.org has degenerated into nothing more than a bunch of idiots looking to start flame wars.

To all the Z3 fans who complained about having to rev the S2000 to high RPMs: Don't let us catch you test-driving the new M3 - 333 HP at 7900 RPM

That comment is just as lame as the guy who said "It's just a Honda!"

BMW makes great cars also. The E46 M3 can hang with a 911 and have PASSENGERS.

The key words above are "having to rev". You don't have to rev it. It's still very fast at nearly any RPM in nearly any gear. BMW makes wide range engines. The new M3 motor makes bucket loads of low end torque everywhere above idle. It produces more torque per litre than any other NA engine. Honda is now starting to use variable valve timing (as in relative timing and not total duration) with VTEC-i and this will help the low/mid ranges quite a bit. Engines just keep on getting better and we enthusiasts are the beneficiaries.

I have to agree. Those boards are horrible.

I was reading the E46 M3 board, because I find it hilarious (BMW is totally screwing buyers over -- maybe even worse than Honda did with the S2000).

Anyway, I found this comment in part of a post tonight:

"What a pittiful launch for BMW, my guess is this car will fall into a limbo area in a year like the s2000 has now. "

With this in one of the responses:

"The S2000 was short lived in big excitement because its overall performance was not in the big leagues...this new M3 is no S2000."

Hmmm...whatever.
