Default $850 problem solved for $11

My dealer told me they had to replace my ECU after a check engine light (scan read random misfire/ok to drive). Then they changed it under warranty and it didn't help. Then they said they had to clean my injectors (paid $90)... didnt do anything... then they said they needed to replace my fuel injectors (for $850, but didnt have it done)!

I wondered if maybe it was just a loose gas cap... they said no. SO- I get my NJ car inspected yesterday- and failed. They said I had a faulty gas cap, wasn't getting proper pressure. Got a new cap, check engine light is off. Problem solved for $11.

Thoughts?

An evaporative emmisions code has nothing to do with a missfire code. They are 2 seperate systems.

That's what I was thinking. But it said OK to Drive along with misfire, so maybe thats a "soft code" that doesn't need repairing? All I know is the car drives great and the check light is off. One mechanic said I should replace my plugs but they shouldn't be bad yet (50k on the car)

With 50K on the car, it can't hurt to spend the 50 bones and get some new plugs.

The stock plugs are NGK, but Denso IK24s are great.

Sounds like another dumb-ass dealer is GUESSING instead of doing their job correctly.

Go to a specialist - and that obviously is not Honda.

I'm trying to get my 91 Civic through NJ emissions and I failed. The check engine light was on for the fuel injector circuit. I checked the fuel pressure, regulator, injector resistance, and injector fuel pressure drop and everything was OK. It turned out to be a faulty ground at the thermostat housing that eventually got rid of the engine light.

Of course I could have worked like a dealership and replaced everything first then fixed the ground cable.

It's sad how badly the dealer tries to rip you off.

About the plugs... why would they need replacing, though? I guess the misfire is SLIGHTLY noticeable in 2nd gear and a slight rough idle sometimes.. but not worth $850 for injectors. What should new plug replacement cost installed? (Believe the dealer never even recommended plugs with a MISFIRE code??)
