Is the 1-2 shift suppossed to be this notchy?
ive recently got my S and notice that my 1-2 shift is considerably notchier than all the others? its not 100% of the time.. probably 80%... especially when im shifting fast... seems like neutral has a notch of its own and hold the shifter there for a split second... is this normal? can the GM Synchro Mesh tranny fluid that i keep hearing about solve this problem... i feel im losing precious time when im trying to shift 1-2 fast?
thanks.
thanks.

My '05 is pretty notchy too, especially when it's colder out. I even missed a hard 1-2 shift yesterday. I don't miss gear often, but this darn gearbox is sometimes..most of the time, so, so sweet, but every once in a while the thing does something strange on me. So, I grinded the 1-2 shift yesterday after trying to shift it fast and hard.

Notice this myself when the transmission is cold. I did notice an improvement with the syncromesh fluid , especially when it has warmed up a bit( 20min of driving).
To really avoid the notchy-ness, try rev-matching better between the 1-2 shift. Sounds stupid, but it works.

Try all of the following:
1) Move your seat closer to the steering wheel.
2) Push the clutch in all the way during shifts.
3) Purge your clutch fluid line of any air bubbles.
4) Change your tranny fluid.

To All!
The 1-2 crunch is very well documented on this forum. It's a common trait with all S2000's. No one is happy about it but it's just the way it is for now.
Iceman1 - This car likes precision in the shifting process. The "notch" you mentions feeling if you pause in neutral for a split second, I'd bet that's just the synchronizers doing their thing. As far as the GMSFM tranny fluid (and be certain you get the "friction modified" version) is concerned, most that have tried it seem to feel it made a positive difference, including myself! I don't think any grinding you're getting in the upper gears is as common. How many miles do you have on the car? Did you buy it used or new?
QUIKAG - The S2000's transmission does not like being man handled. You mentioned shifting "fast and hard." That, to me, is a good recipe for crunching the synchros. It is very possible to shift quite fast with this car without forcing the issue. Are you firmly gripping the shift lever? If so, you don't need to. I've found that I get better results if I generally push or pull the shift lever in the direction it needs to go. There's a centering spring that will automatically guide the lever to the 3-4 line. If that's where you're going, just let it get there on it's own. It only takes slight pressure to the left or right to engage the 1-2 shift line or the 5-6 shift line. I use my fingers or the palm of my open hand to do this and try to never completely grip the shift knob. I goof it up almost every time when I do that.
