A very close to perfectly balanced crank, rods, piston combo will let it rev to 9k no problem. That's where the problem lies though. Actually, now that I think about it a little, wouldn't that completely alter the timing?
He doesn't need ITB's, but replacing valves, valvesprings, and retainers would be a good idea to replace if he's revving that high with the extra displacement. Headwork would also keep the motor from choking. He also IMO NEEDS an EMS, V-afc isn't going to cut it IMO.

Beau-no idea on the stroke of the 289, I'll find out though.

The guys at inline really believe in the vafc they have taken alot of really crazy motors only on the vafc and the crank rods and pistons will be perfectly balanced like i said earlier Jeremy Allen who is building the motor has ALOT of experience on building race motors most of the motors he builds in fact rev well up to 10k no problem. I do agree the stock head will be suffacating the newly added displacement. as for the ITB's we will see but that is far down into the future for my plans i did notice bulletproof has the haywards on their page now. Hopefully others will use these and gain more experience with them. As for the AEM im going to see if i cant have the money before the motor is finished waht is the cheapest price with the wideband from aem? the best ive seen is 1700. i have a good feeling a new all allumin race radiator is going to be needed for this set up in the very near future

You need the EMS so you can alter ignition timing properly. Additionally, you'll get a far lower VTEC point and better transition with the EMS. I recently did a 2.05 liter F20C race motor that had VTEC at 4200 rpm with the EMS. Couldn't do that properly on a VAFC.

You can also desensitize the knock sensor and other little tricks that add up to more power with the EMS.

does desensitiziing the knock sensor mean more damage to the engine?

No, it means it doesn't retard the timing as much when the ECU detects knock. On a stock s2k, the factory ECU pulls a lot of timing under knock.

No, if your motor is detonating, ignition needs to be pulled or damaged will be done. But sometimes your motor pulls timing when it doesn't knock, it just thinks it was. I'm pretty sure this is what UL is talking about.

It still pulls timing, but not as much as the stock ECU does and returns timing back to normal faster. That's what I remember UL telling me when he was flown over here to NY. He could mean something different. He'll just have to chime in himself so we can stop the guessing games.
