Default 2000 S2K Drive Loss

My friend has a 2000 S2K that has an odd problem. When he attempts to move the car, regardless of gear selection, he gets a grinding noise. The noise sounds distinctly related to something in the rear end. We suspected the rear differential and have removed it. It was sent to be inspected/replaced (if needed), but has received a clean bill of health. Have any of you seen or heard something similar to this problem?

The clutch does not feel like it's slipping. We've run the car through all gears up to about 6K RPM on jack stands, with no slippage or grinding noises. We're going to drain the transmission fluid and inspect that this weekend. Once he gets the rear diff back, we'll get everything put together and try to get a video posted on YouTube.

You can see the tripod in this pic (with the 3 bearings on it)

Yours is split.

Billman

You could tell him you have a noise in your engine bay at 2428 rpm and he could tell you that it was a bolt in god knows what location

Would you consider the drivers side boot twisted enough to suspect the spider? I considered that tonight after looking at the shop manual. I guess the only way to test it is to remove that boot, right?

It's better than a bad transmission! I think we'll pull the boot off and check the spider/rollers and go from there.

I knew it was broke before your pics
You can mark the boot with a paint pen and do your drive test again to be sure
You can buy the parts kit from honda, you don't need a whole new axle.

Im the owner of the s2000 and was curious as to how one broken axel on the drivers side will stop the LSD and passenger side axel from driving the other wheel? Logic tells me that the car would still move right? I am probably way off since I am by no means a mechanic but am interested on how that works. unless i damaged both...is that even possible?
