Default 2001 Honda S2000 - Driveshaft Leak Help!

Hello,

My 01 Honda S2000's drive shaft is leaking the grease out. Is it safe to drive around still?? I got quoted $1900 for part & labor!
The mechanic said there's no aftermarket for my car's driveshaft or 'propeller shaft' they said I would have to go OEM which the part itself is list $1456

I found online a used 94K miles driveshaft for $325. Not sure if it's a good idea though or just save up and go new.

My main questions;
Safe to drive meanwhile?
New or used?

Here's a pic, thank you!

You can find them used on this forum all the time, just go used, the new price is outrageous. Try to find one with less miles than the one that you noted, the lower the better.

Thanks so much for the links. Trying to get more info from the seller as far as mileage on them.

Do you know if this part is hard to install or if I can do it myself?
Also is it safe to drive?

Lots of DIYs here for a D/S swap. Be sure to get yourself some new allen head bolts for either end. You'll likely have issues with them.

Big hint vice grip + allen socket make short work of the bolts. The washers are as important as the bolts and should be replaced as worn ones can let the bolts back out. Get two bolts of each flange just in case, but if you do the socket and vice grip combo should be easy enough. It's a big help to have a helper put the car in and out of gear so you can rotate the shaft and get at each bolt. Other than that, piece of cake. Oh and there's a little hanger you have to remove, but that's pretty duh.

Its very easy, with the right tools. The allen heads can be easy to strip the heads. The shaft slides front to rear, so you slide it back to make room in front, slide fwd to get at rear bolts.

The right tool is allen head sockets. Once you have these, this job is cake.

The washer plates do not wear. I have never replaced one and never will. They do not wear or cause bolt back-out.

If you strip the heads of any Allen bolts you will have to grind the head off to remove. Vice grips might help prevent stripping the Allen head but don't be surprised if you strip it. It's difficult to get a good grip on the bolt heads with vice grips.

True, the vice grips help keep the allen slot from mushrooming, and give you an additional source of leverage. It's worked pretty well for me with needle nose vice grips, not the short stubby ones.
