Default 2nd gear issue

shifting from first to second makes me wince every time from the clunkiness. from what i've read, it seems like its a common problem. is that the case?

also, i have grinded 2nd gear twice now... how much damage does that do to my s??

I just did the differential oil change and it really helped a lot. I grinded 5th and 6th before, but it was smooth sailing after I changed the oil. You won't damage anything grinding it once or twice, don't worry about it (it will only drive you crazy).

I still get some clunkiness (especially in 3rd) but it is a lot smoother after a tranny fluid change and diff. fluid change. Try them out if you haven't yet. I don't think you can eliminate the clunkiness, just make it better by warming up the tranny before punching it and keeping those fluids new.

change your trans fluid, grease your shifter, change your clutch fluid, and adjust your clutch pedal so there is almost no play.

This should help you after changing the fluid in the transmission and the clutch.

My second gear is only slightly clunky on a cold start when it's cooler outside. After I shift into 2nd a couple of times it's cleared up. I just make a conscious effort to shift very slowly those first couple of times especially in the winter.

Agreed. Mine doesn't really "grind," as in it's not the sound of NOT putting in the clutch and trying to change gears. It's clunks a bit as you say, only when completely cold. Once it warms up, it's butter smooth. This is common. Actual grinding in to 2nd isn't that common I don't think. I've also found that when I rev it to ~3500 or a little higher in first gear when cold, the clunk is almost completely gone when shifting to 2nd.

Changed the trans fluid with OEM honda @ 30k (currently at 39k). No difference from old fluid to new that I can tell.

Probably not going to help. It's a common "issue" with the car.

It used to bother me, but I'm used to it now. I expect it for the first few shifts to 2nd gear, and then it's gone. I don't know where you rev to in 1st when cold, but like I said before...revving to ~3500-3800 in 1st and then shifting to 2nd nearly eliminates the cold clunk.

My 2nd grinds occassionally at high rpm.
I keep meaning to take it up to the dealer to see if it had the tsb work done.
I just shift in to 2nd a bit slower now at high rpm. Lol
