Default 3rd & 4th Synchros

Hi,

I'm looking to buy my first s2000 this week. I've found a great looking car and am ready to take the plunge.

The owner has told me that there is a problem with the 3rd and 4th synchros after his wife trashed the transmission. He says that honda has quoted around $2000 (AUD) to fix this issue.

Now i have no idea what this is, so can someone fill me in on the details please.. Should i keep clear of this one?

Thanks!

If the trans grinds when upshifting or downshifting in any gear it is usually caused by damaged synchros.

The synchro's are only sold with the matching gear, figure 2-300$ per damaged syncro plus the labor for rebuilding the trans. 800-1400$

If you should buy it is on you. I wouldn't be paying any premium on a car that may need 2-3K in transmission repairs.

Steer clear. If the transmission is that damaged there are probably various other problems. For starters, the clutch is probably fuxxored as well.

Year, condition, and mileage should be a key factor here.

If it's a mint 03 with 10k miles, it may still be a good deal.

If it's a rough 00 with 60k, well, you know.....
