Post 4.44 or 4.56...which one..

Hi Guys....

I am in the search for the best fit for gears for my MY01...and I am trying to determine which gears are better..and what are the pros and cons of each...

I have narrowed it down to 4.44 or 4.56 only bc my car is only going to be street driven and highway sprited drives....i wanna feel the difference in acceleration but not lose to much top end...your input is greatly appreciated....

oh yeah my future plans for MY01 is NA...thanks...

Definetly 4.56-57 if you plan To Stay NA.
4.44 or 4.57 is great for SC but for NA definetly 4.57
So Cheers and good luck,
No doubt 4.57

I think most people that went with a 4.44 was b/c it was that or 4.77s; the 4.56 wasn't around until a few years ago.

4.44s may be better gears for FI (not sure). But from what I read with NA 4.56 are all most people are talking about (unless it's 4.77s for track use).

I just bought 4.56 (not installed yet).

IMO if you go thru all the trouble to change gears you want to feel a big difference. The 4.44s are ~ +8% while the 4.56 are ~ +11%

BTW I was looking at the calculations of speed in gear for the ap1, and the 4.77 are close to 5th gear with stock ratio. In other words, if you are driving on the HW with 4.77s (in 6th) it'll feel as tho you're in 5th gear (stock). You can do a test run by driving around on the HW in 5th with stock gears. Too much for daily use for me. Hopefully the 4.56 will be a happy medium.

I may be wrong, but these are my impressions.

I think xviper explained it well (in another thread). He said, no matter what, the higher (number) gears will pull harder. From a dig, from a roll, on the moon, no matter where, the 4.56 will pull you quicker than the 4.44s.

Now where you loose some time is shifting more often, like the 4.56 you have to shift right at 59-60 mph from 2 to 3. while the 4.44s will give you anohter couple of mph.

Also the higher gears put you higher in the rev range for any given speed, so you have a hundred or two extra rpms meaning a bit extra noise etc..

4.77s will make you feel the strongest, but aren't as livable at HW speeds (when you can't shift to a higher gear). 4.56s will make you feel next strongest etc..

Staying NA, you need all the help you can get (within reason), we don't have much TQ, the 4.56s will help you more than 4.44s (no question IMO).

but not lose to much top end...
This is a bit of a misconception. First of all, a stock S2000 is limited to a top speed of about 150 "real world" mph (ie, flat surface, no wind, sea level). The difference between the "geared" top speeds of 4.44 (153 mph) and 4.56 (149 mph) is, as you can see about 4 mph on an AP1 car. Big whoopty-doo!

I'm looking at getting the 4.44s on an AP2 tranny, anyone have any experience with them on an AP2 tranny??
I currently have the 4.44s on my AP1 and am planning to put in an AP2 tranny. This would approximate having 4.6 final drive in the first 4 gears while still keeping a similar cruising rpm in 6th (actuall, a bit better).

what are the best gears is i was going from a roll
The difference between 4.44 and 4.56 is a mere 2.7%. If you are going to spend that kind of money to do this job, you may as well get the most advantage you can. Why goof around with 4.44s? Now, if you're talking 4.77s, then you have to ask yourself from what speed are you going begin your rolling start? If you start around 25 mph with 4.56s, you are at 6000 rpm in first. For a car with 4.77s, you would be at almost 6500 rpm. You'd run out of rpms 500 sooner and have to shift. Are you a fast shifter? If not, you're going to lose.
On the other hand, a rolling start is just one form of starting. If all you do is push the "go" pedal and somebody beside you does a "rolling clutch dump", he's going to beat you anyway no matter what gears you got or what speed you start at. Life is just so unfair, ain't it?

Well I had 4.44s in my 01 and just switched to 4.77 and will never go back. Its night and day. Didn't really feel the same about the switch from stock to 4.44. Better for sure, but not that big of a deal. Good for highway driving though. The 4.56 aren't much change from the 4.44's so I'm sure I'd feel about the same about those as I did the 4.44s. If you drive short trips and around town with occasional longer trips the 4.77s are great. If you are mainly highway, then the 4.56 are probably the rights choice.

Also, the 4.77s could use a wider tire in back to help with traction, but then you may mess up your diff. From a stop or slow roll, there is no possibility my car with the 4.44s would have kept up with my car with the 4.77s. Same for highway, except if I were to push it over 130 which is pretty stupid.

I don't remember anyway switching back from 4.77s to a less aggressive gear, but many have done what I did.
