Default 5th Gear!

Today i went to shift into fifth gear and it refused. Absolutely would not get into gear. But it would bypass and go into sixth just fine. Then after a little driving it went into fifth but then fell out. It is the only gear that will give me this problem.
It is a 2001 with 57.5k on it. Brand new ap1 clutch.

I am pretty sure fifth is destroyed. I would like to know how, and how much am i lookin to pay to correct this fault? Thank you all in advance

oh and it just happened out of the blue. I drove it almost a hundred miles today and it was fine. Then i parked it at my friends house. And the first time in fifth leaving it was blown!

That's why you don't have 5th.

okay, so i went driving to trouble shoot some more. After warming the car up and going up and down from fourth to fifth gear, because now it goes into fifth without an issue, it just falls out of fifth. From what i have read, this means the sleeve over the fifth and sixth gears is messed up on the aft end of the sleeve. The end facing sixth gear. And the sleeve will not fit completely over fifth gear hence not locking into place. I can hold the shifter in fifth with just the tiniest pressure of my thumb and it works like nothing is wrong. And i can get into sixth without a problem.

So does this sound right? And two can i replace just the sleeve, and should i get it professionally done or just ask some locals to help?

Great time to upgrade to a ap1 transmission to get the killer gearing and carbon synchronizers!

The AP2 gear ratios are set up for the AP2 drivetrain, not the AP1 drivetrain. You switch at your peril.

There is nothing wrong with the AP1 synchros as long as they are not abused.
