Okay, if it was losing power, that is highly suggestive that it is not an electrical problem (battery/alternator) or obviously a starter problem. Perhaps a fuel system problem? Did it feel at all like an engine running out of gas? (In and out power loss, with dwindling power, etc?)

I don't know. "Losing power" could mean damaged cylinders or loss of compression.

Any CEL?

That is quite possible, but I was going for the (potentially) easier fix. It seems slightly odd that he would have that bad of a problem unless he is running some pretty intense mods, etc. I'd check fuel system and perhaps a compression/leak down test.

Edit: I'm attempting to come up with alternative ideas to compression failure... is it possible something is completely blocking your air intake?

A mechanical over rev is the primary cause for bent valves.
