Default AC making loud noise

My AC is making a loud ticking sound and I am not sure where it is coming from.

I'll start with the details on how i came about this assumption.
I was driving on the highway and noticed that about every 45 sec or so, I would hear a static (white noise) kind of sound. At first it sounded like a car radio turned up really loud with no input, but I was hearing this over my music. I turned my music off and still noticed it. I then pin pointed the sound coming from my AC vents. while driving, i turned off the ac and it went away, turned it back on, sound came back.
I then pulled over. When i got out, the sound was much louder and clearer. I popped my hood, and heard the loud ticking.
By using my Tire iron as a stethiscope, I used it to listen to various parrts under the hood to hear where the ticking/tapping was coming from. I could not find the sound get worse anywhere.
You only hear it when My AC compressor kicks on, Any ideas anyone?

Anyone know if the Compressor Clutch (fan clutch) is attached to the Compressor or can be purchased seperately?

Cool, Thanks
well I got an appointment to get my system flushed and refilled. Then I'll find out if I have a leak somewhere or if a part has gone bad. Hope the clutch since it is the cheapest part.

Turns out it was the A/C Compressor. I'm ordering a new one through Nissan with employee pricing so it will be 331 for the compressor, 125 for the clutch and 80 for the coil. Something along them lines brings the total to 550$, free install.
Sux but i need that A/C here in Florida as summer is coming up.

How did all three go bad at once\? It's very rare you need to replace the compressor and the coil at once. Usually you just swap either over.
