About six weeks ago I installed my Alaniz worked head with AEBS studs. I'm now in the process of pulling the engine for a sleeved block and was wondering if anyone has experience with head studs. Should I/can I re-use the studs or should I spring fpr a new set? The folks at AEBS say they are OK to re-use. What do you think?

You actually want them to be stretched, that way they'll torque down. But I'm pretty sure AEBS head studs come pre-stretched. There's nothing wrong with reusing head studs, though the reason we use them is to save the head from wear/tear; removing/replacing head studs negates that, but since you're switching engines, why not.

I would chase the threads and clean them up, both in the head and on the head bolt before you reuse them. Also, you don't need to use a 10ft breaker to tighten head bolts. Just run them down by hand (if they don't go in by hand, they're not clean) til the end of the threads, then give them a 1/4 turn past that.

 

I'd go by the recommendation in the Helm's manual. I know it's talking about OEM head bolts, but it should be the same. I think it says something like "It's OK to use them, but if you hear squeaking as you tighten them, then you should toss them." I don't have it here by me, so I can't quote it verbatim, but you might check it out. I know there was a reference to re-using head bolts.

 

hey fperra what where your final results with the stock block and alaniz head, did you go up to 12-14 psi, if so did you get any dyno time? Anxious to know only becuase I am still waiting for my car to get done. thanks in advance

 

Head bolts are NOT the same as head studs.

 

I actually realized that about half-way through my post, but I decided that the things I said might do someone some good, so I left it anyway.

But I'm glad you pointed it out. I don't expect many people will have experience w/ replacing their head studs, but hopefully someone will have some relevant knowledge (other than what you've already posted).

 

Unfortunately, I only had the head on for about 3 weeks before I decided to remove it and get a sleeved block for more HP. I never did get to a dyno, but I did run 12 psi with no problems. Car felt strong, no detonation, but I don't trust seat of the pants HP, so I can't really say.

 

what is the advantage of using head studs versus head bolts?
