Default Aftercooler?

I don't have as much knowledge on superchargers as I am a turbo freak, but am liking the idea of the comptech kit. My only question is what does the aftercooler actually do? Looks as if it something like an intercooler to cool the air entering the engine. If this is so then wouldn't getting the supercharger kit with a front mount intercooler work just as well, or give more hp gain. Has anyone supercahrged that also added a front mount instead of the aftercooler? Maybe there would be higher gains from a front mount. I guess my real question is would they work the same, or would the front mount be worse to have with the supercharger?

The Comptech aftercooler is basically a air/water intercooler. A nice frontmount would probably cool the air better, but it would come with a lot of drawbacks such as more preasure drop, laggier throttle response, more cost, more difficult installation, more weight, etc.

Your right it probably would cost more, and there would be a higher gain in weight as appossed to the aftercooler. I understand the response would not be as quick, but what do you mean when you say there would be more preasure drop?

Since the lenght of piping with a FMIC is probably 5x or more longer, it takes more time for the pressure to build up in that long pipe after every shift.

with the comptech aftercooler, it is a very short path and takes much less time to pressurize.

All turbo/centrifugal charger systems lose pressure after each shift or when you let off the throttle. The difference is when there is less volume to pressurize, there's not as much lag in building pressure in the intake charge.

well said, i understand what you mean. I guess the aftercooler would be the best way to go for the supercharger, but I am curious to know exactly how ,if anyone has a fmic with supercharger, how they like the set up that way, and maybe see some dyno results as well. The idea of the supercharge over turbo is starting to intrege me a bit, but I still have to research a bit more before making my dicision.

Several people have or have tried a FMIC with a Comptech or Vortech SC. Unfortunately they seldom post much about it afterwards which leads me to believe they are either having so much fun VTEC'n with boost or it wasn't all it was cracked up to be. I suspect the latter. Happy to be proven wrong.
