Default All Out All Motor?

I went to get a few quotes for a turbo today, and most of them ended up being about $11,000 Australian Dollars (About $6000 US Dollars)

That doesn't worry me overly much, except that it's a big hit all at once. I can't get a basic turbo now, and upgrade later.

My power goals were about 300rwhp for a mid 12s car. With a budget of about $6000US, is this possible Naturally Aspirated? What I am thinking, is that if I get reasonably close to my targets with what I have to spend, then I'd go for it, because it means I can spend a grand here and a grand there, and not slug my bank account something severe all at once.

The other appeal of Naturally aspirated, is that I have one less thing to worry about going wrong, and I also have also already ordered an Injen CAI, which the turbo manufacturers said would not fit with the new turbo. It's not a huge investment, being $350US + fitting, but I've already got an exhaust system too, that I don't really want to just throw away.

What do you guys think? Are my goals realistic given budget and an all motor set up? Thanks.

it's not really the turbo that costs the most but all the other parts etc.. that have to also be bought with the kit. You could get a supercharger kit that would be about $2000 less than the turbo kit. You could also get an AEM EMS + other things with that would get you close to what just a bolt on turbo or supercharger kit would get you. It all depends on how fast you want to go and how soon.

300 rwhp on a NA motor would require everything but the kitchen sink, but it may well be possible. To even consider it, you'll have to plan on:
- intake, header, exhaust
- cams and other headwork (porting, compression ratio, rev limit)
- fully programmable ECU (AEM, or the rumored-to-be-coming Hondata) and lots of dyno time

Even then, I highly doubt it's achievable for US$6K. Each of those line items can easily run $2-4K.

But man, that would be one awesome motor.

It's possible, but not for $6K. Also, it's not the kind of thing you can piece together. The internals will need to be extensively modified.

Even so, stay tuned..........

Your rear end can't handle 300rwhp.

Sure it can Rob, it just won't like it if you drop the clutch with that much power.

300 rwhp is possible, but it won't be happening on pump gas anytime soon, and it won't be cheap.

Thanks so far for your help and opinions.

I'm still thinking this over. I have a little while to do this, since I'm not in a huge hurry to get this all finished and racing any time soon. I've set myself a budget for $1k a month, and the next 3 months or so are taken up with the X-Brace, brakes, springs and shocks mods.

After that, I am probably going to get Toda Cams. It's only then, that I need to decide which way I am going.

I am 90% certain that Turbo is now out of the question. I've been told I can get a Basic Super Charger kit for $3K + about $750 for install, then I can get the little other bits that make it better - like an intercooler upgrade kit, a magnetic clutch (to avoid changing pulleys all the time) and so forth. This looks more palatable than spending $6k in one hit.

What do people think of this idea?

A supercharger is the same as turbocharger in the sense that you can still modify your car further to attain higher HP numbers so if you are aiming for the Supercharger, then go for it.

you guys are forgetting any safety equipment...if I ever get around to doing headwork I'm going to buy a wideband O2 and J&S knock sensor to protect my investment...that's another bundle of money. I figured to do that and do a thinner head gasket, valve springs and cams would be about $4-5k, and who knows what that would get me in terms of power.
