Default Amsoil MTF...is it ok to use?

I was in the process of ordering some of Amsoils ASL 5w-30 for the engine and I decided I might as well get some manual transmission fluid and change it out as well. I noticed on their application listing that the Amsoil MTF 5w-30 was recommended for my car. Well today I was reading the s2000 owners manual (because Im a noob to the s2000) and noticed it said to use 10w-30 for the transmission.

Is using the Amsoil 5w-30 going to be ok? I read through the oil journals and noticed one member gave the Amsoil MTF a thumbs up.

Well, it's good that you're reading the manual but I don't recall what the manual specifically says on motor oil in the transmission. I'm 90% sure that if you go back and re-read the manual it will tell you that motor oil is OK for limited use. I don't think the S2000 manual specifically OKs using straight motor oil in the transmission.

AMSOIL MTF has been used successfully by many members here. The new Honda MTF has been reported to work better than the old as well. GM synchromesh friction modified has a big following here too, so there's many to choose from.

Thanks for the info. What I was really asking is that the manual says to use a 10W transmission fluid and I purchased a 5W. I just wanted to make sure that its ok to use the 5W Amsoil that I bought.

you'll be just fine with a 5w. In fact, the new Honda MTF feels much thinner to me than the old stuff did. I realize this is not a scientific or factual description of the product but, it wouldn't surprise me if the new Honda MTF was a 5w as well.

Thanks. Now im going to hijack my own thread for a minute.... the manual says to change the mtf while the car is level however I dont see how Im able to do that in my driveway. Since you think 30 mins is too long then would you explain to me how you change it

That's an excellent question that has already been answered in the FAQ!

EDIT: as a side note I might have been wrong about the time that it takes to change the fluid. If this is your first time changing it, it could very well take you all of 32 minutes to complete the entire project.
Haha... thanks!

JoJoCal19: Are you talking about this?
MTF Synth Synchromesh Trans Fluid
IMO it's kinda strange that Amsoil is using an engine oil viscosity specification for a gear oil.
That makes them have to warn you, in red :
Not for use in engines or wet clutch applications.

The gear oil equivalent of 5W-30 would be 75W-85 (+- 5)

I've been using SF MTL-P for a while now and am very pleased with it.

I did end up finding one or two threads that people have used it and love it.
