Default Amsoil Weight?

Hey all I just am coming up on my first oil change for my S2K.

I love Amsoil products. When I got the car I let the dealer do all the fluids front to back but I usually do my oil for peace of mind.

Just wonderd what weight for S2K and I read there was something screwy with the oil filter when you install it?

Thanks for helping a noob!

I currently run Amsoil for all but the trans (which I will switch to soon)
10w-30 for engine
Honda MTF for the trans
75w-140 for the diff seeing as I live in a warm climate.
As far as the oil filter goes I've never encountered anything out of the ordinary, just remove and replace with a new oem filter and put some fresh oil on the gasket so it seals well. Turn until it makes contact and then give an extra 7/8ths turn and you're set.

Currently running:
Amsoil Signature Series 10W-30
Amsoil Synchromesh MTF
Amsoil Severe Gear 75w-110
OEM Oil filter

Live in SoCal, mostly daily driving/occasional canyons/track. Have no issues with the oils!

Thanks! I will order some!

Is it a crush washer on the drain plug? Or a reusable?

I like to use a little heavier oil so I use 0/40 or 10/40, for the rear end I've used both the 75/110 or 75/140(like them both) but didn't like the 75/90. Only had it in the rear end for around 10k miles and I drained it out, had the most fuzz on the drain bolt of any of the lubes I have ran in my S(135k miles). For the trans I run a mix of Red Line MT85 and MT90(Red Line says its OK to mix any of their MTL and MT together) MT85 a little thin and the MT90 took to long to thin out and I found that a 50/50 mix of those works great for my S.

Hey Hawk --

The spec lubricants are listed in an obscure, hard to find place called the Owner's Manual... Same for how to tighten the oil filter.

Amsoil weighs the same as all other motor oil.

Thanks Chuck. I am aware of that but having owned many exotic cars over the years have found that over time the OEM recommended weights are not always what are found to be the best in High Performance engines. Try BMW M cars that spin rod bearings like candy. You find that people recommend other weights and oils to help extend the life of some design flaws some times.

I only asked about the filter cause I friend that had one told me something was strange about installing it. I guess he was incorrect.

The only thing "weird" about outing the oil filter is you will probably need a cap filter wrench to tighten it enough. Most people cannot hand tighten it to the correct spec.

The oil filter has 8 numbers around the perimeter and instructions printed on the filter on how many numbers to turn it after it hits the block. "About 7/8 of a turn" according to the filter. There's torque spec (probably in the shop manual) and the cap filter wrench has a 3/8" socket for a torque wrench. This may be easier than counting the numbers and is what I do. I like torque specs and if specified will apply them.

Everyone has a favorite brand of engine oil to include "anything Walmart has on sale." We know the Honda engineers who designed this engine were complete idiots but the Honda spec is 10w-30 or 5W-40. This tells me anything in those ranges is fine. With synthetics there is no reason not to use even 0W-30/40 oil. Notice your newer cars may use 0w-20 oil? Not a problem either although you may get some wastage from thinner oil at operating temperatures. The guy who runs Blackstone Labs (the oil analysis lab) notes no additional wear with 20 spec oil in his own cars even though a thicker oil is specified. Abused cars like race cars have their own lubrication specs.

Everyone will defend their own favorite engine oil. Which is better is, for the most part, PII (preoccupation with insignificant increments). An oil analysis will answer those wear questions. I have no idea what oil was in my engine when I bought my 38,000 mile car 3 summers although a hint was the last oil and filter change was at Sears! I've run Royal Purple 10W-30 full synthetic since then with good oil analysis at each change. Lower than average engine wear according to he Blackstone database. I'm sure Amsoil or Mobile-1 would be fine. And Walmart oil probably too!
