Another Odd Whining Thread.
Hate to post another one, I've searched looking for similar situations.
I have an 05 w/ 12.5k miles. The whine-type noise specifically happens at 54-59mph, increasing in pitch and intensity as speed increases in that range under increasing throttle oad. The sound is most noticeable in 5th and 6th gears, although it exists in 4th and 3rd but is clouded due to motor noise. It goes silent coasting in neutral in that range, and during constant maintaining of speed. As soon as you apply throttle to accelerate, the sound is apparent and comes from either the center of rear of the car, i hate to be this vague, but its hard to pinpoint due to the sound being projected. If I stab the throttle off and on, it almost acts as if it's a switch for the noise.
Background on the car, the differential was previously replaced, due to my complaint above, in addition to loud clunking and groaning at low speeds from the rear. The noise was still apparent after the new differential without the other symptoms. I have Mobil 1 diff fluid in the car now. The dealer that 'replaced' my diff is now saying that the sound is not of huge concern or out of the ordinary.
I've ridden in other S2000s and this sound does not seem to make the noise or be anywhere existant at all under the same conditions as my car.
Any ideas? I know it's a shot in the dark diagnosing these things over this medium.

Get the dealer to note that the diff is noisy in the car's history, then drive it till it fails. With the top up, my car makes all sorts of scary mechanical noises. That's why I don't drive much with the top up.
How did they replace the Diff? As a unit or did the open it up and service it?

Maybe the noise that is leftover is a rear wheel bearing?
It is hard to pinpoint what side by driving the car.
IMO you need to listen at the wheel.
Do the MY05's also need to have the axle nuts torqued down to the higher specs?
Succes.
Let us know what you find.

I don't believe they need that higher torque spec, but maybe someone more in the know can respond to that. I'm not superly mechanically inclined, but the sound never occurred to me as wheel bearing related, I will add that to the list of things to consider though. Thanks.
I suspect the new diff you got wasn't actually new. It may have been a rebuilt one and perhaps badly rebuilt. Also, you say you have Mobil 1 diff fluid in there now. Was that what the dealer put in from the start or is it something you put in after you got the car back? Can you determine if the level of the fluid is correct?
The symptoms you describe would not indicate wheel bearings to me. Wheel bearings generally don't whine at such specific road speeds, loaded or unloaded. However, I can see that a rear diff would do this.

I have the same suspicions about the 'new' rear diff. As for the fluid, the fluid was replaced after I got the car back as a precaution and I can confirm that the levels are correct.

This almost makes me think "4.57 gears"
Not likely though

So it is not new, straigh out of a box from Honda?
Is it an official Honda Dealer?
I was "assuming" new diffs do not make noise.
But a brand new diff will self destruct if it has the wrong oil in it.
Did that "old" oil smell like sulphur?
Do you remember how that "old" oil looked?
I mean.. IF that diff was brand new (out of a box from Honda, factory filled oil) that oil would have been like new.
edit : quotes dont work?
