Default Another silly oil question

I have another silly oil question about your first oil change.

I just changed my oil for the first time, at 2600 miles - did I change too soon?

The reason is, I've had the car for about 6 months with the original factory oil. I've always heard 3 months or 3,000 miles. To reach 3,750 miles, it would take me another 4 months to get there, and I thought that would be too long to wait for an oil change.

I've done extensive searches on this site to answer my question, but have not found an answer yet. Does time play a factor in oil changes, or is it just mileage we should be concerned about?

I am sure you are safe...some people wait for the 7500 and some people do it at 1000. there is really no research that I have seen which proves which way to go. Unless someone on here can show me that I am wrong

I think the 3 month rule is rather short. If I were you, I would have waited another 4 months. The important thing is that you don't go to synthetic until you have between 7,500 and 10,000 miles.

I think it should be until you have over 10,000 miles.

The dealership said since I am not putting many miles on the car, he would bring it in every 6 months. He says there is no problem with what I did (changing the oil early). I asked him about the additives in the oil, and he says he has not heard of that.

At any rate, thanks for all the respnses! I feel better now. I will keep changing the oil at the recommended mileage intervals or 6 months, whatever comes first. I will go synthetic after 10,000 miles.

Not that I'm saying you did anything wrong cause I think you're fine. However, don't trust ANYTHING the dealer tells you. This board is littered with posts about dealers telling people things that turned out to be untrue. Many of them had to do with mechanical things with the car. Scary stuff. I'm sure their are some dealers that know their stuff. Unfortunately there are enough that don't or if they don't know will tell you something wrong anyways cause they don't want to look stupid. As a result it's best to take anything you hear from any dealer with a huge grain of salt.

I've run synthetics since 3K, no consumption, no smoke on track hard right handers, no issues.

Lots of folk-lore about oil. As a data point, both Porsche and BMW (among many others) factory fill with synthetic, and have 15,000 mile change intervals.

My s2k motor oil and OEM filter change syndrome:
#1@3,100 miles fill w/Castrol GTX 10W30,
#2 @4,800 miles (before winter storage) fill w/Mobil 1 10W30,
#3 @7,500 miles fill w/Mobil 1 10W30,
#4 @ 9,800 miles (before winter storage) fill w/Mobil 1 10W30.
No discernable difference in motor characteristics compared to new, its runs and motors seemingly perfectly. I am hard pressed to think the synthetic detractors have a scientific case.
