Thumbs up Any merit to this type of airbox mod?

I was looking at the stock airbox, and the Comptech and K&N intakes enclosures, and I got to thinking about how a stock airbox would work if you removed the lid and added some stripping so it sealed the open top against a closed hood.

The K&N enclosure is pretty straightforward, but is not a complete seal, and the volumes of both the Comptech and K&N boxes are rather small. It seems Honda engineered the OEM box to be large for a few reasons, including resonance, air distro into the filter, and pressure, and I wonder how much better the smaller enclosures really work...

So, if you have a gutted OEM box and add some foam/rubber stripping to the top of the open box to seal it against a closed hood, that would keep warm air from leaking into the box and pressure from dropping, correct? The overall enclosure volume wouldn't change much, but would it yield a better sound without the loss to hp that you get by simply removing the OEM cover, no?

What are people's opinions on this?

I don't see why it won't work like a K&N...go for it!

I compleatly removed my stock box slaped on a new filter and went with it. Deffinately sounds better and feels a little faster. but by no mean after market gains. Eh Getting an Intake soon Im just dont feel like waiting, and Im cheap lol. But I was thinkin of what you said. If you have a hood scoop right over the box then sealed it to the hood I would think I was yeild a significant gain. Even more while driving a high speeds. If you do any of this let me know how it turns out.

Pretty much just for sound. I already have a K&N filter, I want more growl at throttle, and removing the airbox cover seems like the most straightforward solution, so why not just seal it against the hood some how to prevent the hp loss?

How would you loose power by taking off the cover? If anything I would think you would get more? Think about it... Less restriction more power. Isn't that why we use after market intakes?

By taking off the cover you are sucking up the hot air from the engine bay. You already do that to an extent on hot days, and taking off the airbox cover just adds to it. All of which in turn means less HP.

You will loose MAJOR horsepower without the lid, or removing the box. We've proven that years ago.

A great test is to do roll on tests with your buddy, and keep switching the lid from car to car. The car with the lid on will win every time. You'll pull over a complete car length before you even shift.

Which is why I was thinking, if you seal the box against the hood, you avoid all that, correct? Just use a foam or rubber material that will seal against the hood without damaging it?

Then maybe add a cooling plate, and you have a decent intake system?
