Just out of curiosity... why would anyone make a heat shield out of something that isn't resistant to heat? In fact it's actually ruined by heat. Just wondering...

Larry, actually it's just called that. The CF is actually reinforced with a heat resistent backing that is similar to what is used in fire suits. If search was working I would find you the thread.

Actually, you can get CF materials to withstand over 500F. The CF itself can handle quite a bit, but the choice of resin is what is critical.

However, the disadvantage of CF is that its a good conductor of heat, so as a heatshield it doesn't function as optimally as something like fiberglass. Hence, the need for a reflective backing.
