Default Is anyone using a knock sensor device??

I'm looking at getting a knock sensor installed additional to the stock sensor on the F20C & I wanted to see if anyone else has anything installed like this yet??

The one put to me is a unit made by a company called Link and I'm not too impressed by it to be honest, so what are my options?

also I have an AEM EMS & I dont know if I can get anything that will attach to that or not!?!?!

Thanks in advance

Andy

The AEM EMS can read the stock knock sensor, why do you want to "upgrade"?

Andy, can you use 2 knock sensors (stock and the link or 2 oem sensors) with the AEM EMS?

I've only read the instruction cover to cover 2-3 times.
I've yet to play with the EMS because my engine rebuilt has been very slow due to a number of parties

I had the impression that you could use 2 knock sensors with the ems....but I've not set this up successfully yet ....can't hardly wait. The advantages of using 2 knocks sensors are that it allows better detection of knocks and better adjustment of fuel according to where the knock comes from.

Is this right Andy and do you have any tips for setting up this dual knock sensors system?

Thanks guys,

I understand the EMS can read the stock knock sensor, but I want a display for it so I can monitor the levels of knock without having the laptop plugged in all the time.

Ideal situation is what honda9krpm said, to have another knock sensor from an Aus S2000 as these have two from standard, then have some form of display which can plug direct into the EMS to give an accurate reading, I want to go this route but want a decent display.
No tips as yet for setting it up mate, sorry I'll post when I've done it.

My issue is getting a good display system which can read the knock either direct from the sensors or via the EMS, I just wanted to see if anyones explored this yet?

Cheers

Andy

andy, I think the jap engine has 2 knock sensors and the Aus f20c has only 1...well unless I got it mixed up. I am pretty sure that someone will be more than willing to correct me if this is wrong because I am in a firing box atm

sounds like a good idea with the display thing andy

Any news yet Andy?

would it work if you set up a digital counter in parallel to the stock knock sensor such that it could pick up the voltage spike? I better PM modify to see what he can come up with

This would be a great safety measure to check for extra knocks eg after filling up to see if the new fuel cause extra knocks. I don't know about you guys but this is a common problem in Australia. It would be handy to have such a thing. PowerFC has this founction on the hand controller.

From what I know, the knock sensor is reasonably complicated to interface to. It's not something like the VTEC sensor that gives a "Yes/No" signal if it senses engine knock.

It generates a voltage depending on how much "noise" it hears, and there is some amount of noise that is normal, and it varies with rpm. You have to compare the sensor voltage to "known normal" voltages for the current engine rpm, and if the knock sensor is higher, then the engine is knocking. Since the sensor voltage changes with rpm you have to constantly sample the voltage and compare it to a table of the correct voltages for each rpm. That takes a microprocessor.

I have thought about making such a device for over a year but always have other projects going and never get around to it. It would be nice to have a big red light on the dash that flashed whenever knocking is sensed.

I've not managed to look into anything yet guys sorry.

Modifry if you end up looking into this further let me know as I'm activley looking for a knock type device, my options so far are this Link system which works well but it has a BIG ugly box that sits on the dash & a HKS knock amp (yet to look at this properly but looks nice).

I think I'm gonna phone Sean or Chris @ Horsepower freaks to see if they know of anything they should be telling us
